How to Encourage your Child to Read
How to Encourage your Child to Read
Every child read differently.
Some may be able to grasp the concept of reading while others may not.
Do you as a parent know what type of learner your child is?
Most of the parents do not know if their child would be able to read and then process whatever he has read.
The parents need to understand the capabilities of their children and find a way to motivate them to read through creative interactions.
At school, the children are taught how to read and pronounce.
They are taught how to form words with the help of letters. This is the basic that a child should know.
How can a parent help their child to get into the habit of reading, something that can help the child to build a foundation for lifelong learning?
A parent talks to a child and even reads to them ever since the child is born.
It is never too early to introduce your child to books.
A child as a baby responds to you when you read out bedtime stories to him and as he starts growing, he starts to recognize and loves their daily bed storytime.
“As a parent, you have to lay the foundation for an interest in books in your child”,
says Chitresh Mathur – cofounder Intelligentsia World – A Highly Researched Playschool.
The child needs to be involved in the story.
Initially, the story does not have to be read to the child.
The story can be made upon the basis of pictures.
The child will understand the story based on the pictures.
With the help of interactive stories, the child gets more and more interested in reading.
Your child should be allowed to choose
Encourage your child to select a book and sit and read with you.
Since the child would have chosen the book, he will be quite excited to read it.
It really doesn’t matter what sort of a book it is, but what matters is that the child has himself chosen from a selection of books.
Over a period of time, the parent will understand what books the child likes and dislikes.
In the initial days, you need to read with your child whatever is appealing to your child.
This is the way to make sure that the child gets involved in reading.
Encourage the child to turn the page of the book and focus on some pictures and words in the book.
The child will then be able to identify the words and pictures whenever needed.
Once the child becomes interested in the book, he will definitely get actively involved in it and will grasp it in a better way.
The child may want to read the story again, which is completely alright.
The child starts to recognize his favorite book, which can be used to distract the child when required, especially when the child is cranky.
Repetition
Children love to read their favorite books again and again.
They learn a lot through this.
The child should be motivated to understand the story every time it is read out to him.
The child can be asked what is next in the story so that they begin to concentrate more.
This activity can be performed again and again with the child.
Read Out to Your Child
The book should be read out to your child.
This helps in increasing vocabulary and grammar.
The child learns to pronounce the words correctly when it is read out to them.
The parent and child bond gets strengthened as the child hears your voice and interacts with you.
On top of it, the child also receives attention from the parents.
Pay Attention To What The Child is Reading
The parent must keep a watch on what the child is reading, not only to make sure that the child is reading correctly but also to bond with him.
A parent’s advice on books is what a child cherishes.
If your child gets stuck with words, the parent must encourage them to keep trying.
The child needs to be explained in a way that he understands and once they have understood, the child should be praised.
The parent should always take an active interest in reading with the child.
